New BH Results after 6 weeks ON TRACK

This is the first time I visited my new BH after officially open on 7-feb. Previous visit was done by my brother. There are 20 bird shits spot now compare to 5 spots 3 weeks ago. A lot of new bird shit spots at the center of BH right below 4-cluster tweeter using VT-16. Enjoy the pictures below.









I use Magic Bullet to play pulling sound at corners or entrance holes. The birds really enjoy the sound from this tweeter.

This is another sound playing by VT-25 (3x7"). The birds and "Cockroach" like it too. Don't understand why this unwanted guest come in so early :(


The data logger shows that the Temperature from mid-feb to early Mar at the high side. The highest is 30.5deg. If the temp reach 31deg, I might consider to use Thermal Paint on my roof. Btw, the rockwool that I use is the lowest density. I will choose higher density for future BH.

Humidity at the low side as I do not use any humidifier in my new BH yet. But soon I will start using a new Ultrasonic Humidifier from one of new supplier. I will touch a bit more on that in my next article.

3D Drawing using Google Scratch

You need proper plan to design new BH. One of the very important information is to able to draw your new BH in 3D image. With this info, you can visualize clearly what is the flying path of your new tenant. You can sport any error in your BH design earlier.

Remember it only takes few minutes for you to modify your BH design in 3D model. But it will take days to modify your design when your BH is completed.

New BH Results - 26Feb11 (3 weeks)

After a lot of afford put in to study what is the best design, the best sound system, best tweeters selection and best insulation materials, finally the result is out.....(note the best only apply to my BH)

Close to 3 weeks after operation, there are 5 patches of bird shits at the expected locations except the top right corner location. I gave 'A' for myself. If top right corner also has bird shit, then I will give 'A+'.

Anyone Interested on Roxul MPS?

For those who know me well, I only recommend products that I tested well in my own BH. There are quite a number of people want to find out from me:-

1. How much is the Roxul MPS:
Ans: Rm55/bale. Each bale consist of 6 pcs slab with 4x2' and 2 inch thick. Note the price excluding shipping cost.

2. How to install?
Ans: Just place the MPS on top of ceiling. Make sure no gap between each slab. 3. Advantages

• Simple and fast installation;
• No sagging/slumping, rigidity lasts for a lifetime of a building;
• Can be tailor made to various dimensions;
• Water repellent;
• Thermal insulant;
• Non-combustible and firesafe;

I have been using 2" Styrofoam at my old BH and the temperature not stable enough. Consider the vast advantages that Roxul MPS provided over Styrofoam and a slight increase in cost, so please consider MPS in your next BH.

New JV BH Opening - 7th Feb 2011

7th Feb 2011 is the officially opening of my JV BH. I have put in a few new idea in this new BH.

1. Use Rockwool as ceiling insulator. You can see the chart below, the Temp and Humidity are very stable. 3rd Feb to 5th Feb is hot day in Malacca. No raining.



2. Use all good tweeters. You can see in pictures below I use VT-16 (2x5") and VT-25 (3x7") as internal sound. I use Magic Bullet and Bullet Bazooka (not shown) as pulling sound.

3. More Tweeters at the Corner of BH. I hope to create colony corner. Based on my experience, once a colony is being formed, the grow would be very fast.

4. More Fake Nests at Corner BH. I use total 50 ready made fake nests and installed a lot of Styrofoam fake nests.

5. Sound System Arrangement shown in Pak Hen Book. Hope this can create more surround sound effect.





6. Magic 4 to replace Hexagonal. Use 4pcs Magic Bullet which consist of Bi-Radial horn and Bullet Tweeters. The sound is clearer than normal tweeters.


There will be a lot of things to learn from this new BH.

Bullet Tweeter Frequency Spectrum

Some one asked what is the frequency spectrum for Bullet Tweeter. From the spec, it is from 1.8K to 30K.

* Similar to KSN1142A * Power handling: 100 watts RMS. * Frequency response: 1800-30000 Hz * SPL: 92 dB 1W/1m * Mounts to any 1-3/8", 18TPI horn *

But from the Frequency Spectrum, you can see clearly that 1.8KHz to 30KHz is where the SPL > 90dB.

For SPL > 80dB, the min frequency actually start at 800Hz.
Some study said that Swiftlet sound start as low as 1KHz. So, it is important to get a good tweeters that can cover the whole frequency range.

The Bullet Tweeter is used in Bullet Bazooka and Magic Tweeter.

Temp and Humidity Chart for my New BH

Below are my Temp and Humidity chart for my new JV BH. It consist of 2 shop lot.

The first shop lot is belong to Lim. This is where the entrance hole located. The highest temp is 31 degC and the temperature fluctuate.
This is another shop lot Temp and humidity chart. This shop lot is connected to the first shop lot by 2 holes at the front and back. This BH temperature and humidity is very stable. When the temperature at first shop lot reach 31degC, this shop lot only reach 29degC.
Both shop lots were installed with Rockwool insulator at the ceiling. The only different is the first with Open roof. Maybe that is why the temperature and humidity are fluctuate more. I still investigating what is the root cause. Hopefully can found it before Grand Opening during CNY.

Btw, the BH has not installed any humidifier yet. The average humidity already around 80%. So I would like to start without the humidifier for at least first 3 months. I just want to make sure the plank is properly dried.

How to Play 2 Different Sound with 1 Amp

The are few people asked me how to play 2 different sounds using 1 amp. To do that first you need to download the Audacity program. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Use the program to open the 2 sounds that you would like to combine.

Sound A
Sound B

Open New File

Split the Sound A and B from Stereo to Mono

Highlight one channel from each sound and drag to the new file.

Change the New File sound from Mono to Stereo.

You might need to cut the sound so that both sound has equal length and end at the same time. Save the new sound in Mp3 format.
Now you have new sound that playing different sound at different channel.

Sound Installation

A lot of people have different sound installation method. For my new BH, I decided to use the lesson that I learned from Pak Hen seminar.

Internally I have:-
1. Internal sound - consist of different internal sounds playing out from the left and right channels.
2. Colony sound playing from the center tweeters.
3. Pulling sound playing from Magic Bullet.

Externally I have
1. Magic 4 - use 4 pcs Magic Bullet. It function like Hexagonal cum Bazooka
2. Bullet Bazooka - 2 pcs.

Total 4 amps.

I use all good quality tweeters in my new BH which consist of:-
1. VT-16 2x5"
2. VT-25 3x7"
3. Magic Bullet
4. Bullet Bazooka.

I spend extra 2K~3K on tweeters compare to normal tweeters. If you take the additional cost compare to the overall BH cost, it is only < 10%.

There is no solid prove that a better tweeters will give you better results. But I ask myself, what is the reason people playing birds sound external and internally? Obviously is to try to intimate the real birds and let the new birds know this BH has a lot of its friends. This BH is mature and safe. Furthermore, since the additional cost is not a lot, so, I go for the better one.
